The system consists of a thermobalance connected to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, which in turn is connected to a gas chromatograph with a mass spectrometry detector.
The entire system and its modules are from the Perkin Elmer brand. The module models are:
-Thermogravimetric analyzer TGA 8000
-FT-IR Spectrometer Spectrum Two
-TGA-IR-GC/MS Interface TL 9000e
-Gas Chromatograph Clarus 690
-Mass Spectrometer Clarus SQ 8 T
The system allows working on the thermal decomposition gases of the sample in the TGA, which can be in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen) or an oxidizing atmosphere (air). Throughout the thermogram, the FTIR of the decomposition gases can be performed, obtaining a three-dimensional spectrum (wave number-temperature-signal intensity). With gases from the FTIR, there are three different ways to proceed:
1) Terminate the analysis and expel it to the outside.
2) Continuously introduce the gases into the mass detector, throughout the thermogravimetric analysis.
3) Take a gas sample at a certain temperature and chromatograph it to determine the nature of the gases decomposed at a certain time.
This system is very useful for studying polymeric reactions, decomposition of pharmaceutical products, etc.
